Healthy, free-range, chickens, island-raised and island-processed

The Benson Family has been supporting Agriculture in this area since 1948. George and Betty have for the past eleven years been producing a “natural grown” Veggie farm, this interest was promoted by George’s parents Bill & Madge Benson and his Grandfather Fred Cardy. When Betty started in Poultry she wanted to provide the most nutritious food for her family and the community; to supply a healthy alternative and promote food sustainability for Vancouver Island,she learned that Lyle Young was building a CFIA approved processing plant that was also SPCA approved, she was Lyles' first customer when he opened. George thought it was a good idea to begin the transition to BC Certified Organic for the Veggie farm at the juncture of this new enterprise.

In this beautiful valley roam happy Chickens & Turkeys farmed ethically with COABC rules that are independently observed through Pacific Agricultural Certification Society. Our soil is the key to our future. We have followed through with our environmental Farm Planner and are
just about to conclude this process.

The poultry is fed a veggie based diet, which includes barley, winter wheat, vetch, white and red clover, pea, corn. Hens have a .62 hectare available for free range. Meat Birds have their own fields, and we have a brooder house to raise chicks until they are fledgling and can be placed in a protective shelter on the fields. Each day the poultry eats the varied field diet, drinks potable drinking water, and enjoys our veggie based feed that contains no medications. Then our shelters are moved ahead leaving behind a source of Nitrogen for quick plant growth. The veggies we grow are Tomatoes, Kale, Swiss Chard, Potatoes, many types of Lettuces, Garlic, and Broccoli.
